Many years ago, when I was publishing the Mullet Rapper, Claudia Davenport and Cheryl Henderson suggested that we start a column called “Angels of the Swamp” to recognize individuals who contribute so much to our community. I thought this was a great idea and still is. “Swamp Angels” is a nickname for mosquitoes who are a nuisance and pests in the summer around here. However, Angels of the Swamp has a more endearing connotation, and we consider them “special.”
At this time, it is appropriate to highlight the many winter residents who are returning home. During our busy season, you will find volunteers EVERYWHERE. They pick up trash during their daily walks, they help out at the Food Pantry every Wednesday morning, they are greeters at our Everglades Area Visitor Center, they cook and serve food during the many Lions Club events, they bake goods for Church fundraisers, they organize and participate in the Book Club, they welcome newcomers during the Thursday Ladies Coffee get togethers, etc., etc., etc. They are indeed an integral part of our community and true “Angels.” Thank you all so much for your love and interest and contributions in making our community a better place to live. Safe travels and we will see you again next season.
