First Friday at Rod and Gun Club

Posted

The Everglades Society for Historic Preservation held its "First Friday Social Gathering" event on November 7 in the historic bar at the Rod and Gun Club. There were approximately 40 ESHP members and city residents who enjoyed having a drink (or mocktail) at the famous bar. Thomas Lockyear arrived with three posters of scenes from nearly 100 years ago, including one of Snooky Senghaas, the club's manager, who Barron Collier brought over from Bavaria in the 1920s. Everyone enjoyed the trivia games of guessing which U.S. Presidents came to visit or fish, how many movies were filmed in the bar, and what celebrities stayed or came for lunch throughout the years. Patty Huff gave a guided tour of the first-floor area and several people shared their memories. The next "First Friday" event will be held on December 5 at the Rod and Gun Club at 5:00 PM. With such a large crowd, the bar next to the pool will be the venue - with lots more stories to tell of times gone by.
