Fresh Herbs for Cooking

Posted

South Florida in the wintertime is a perfect place to enjoy growing fresh herbs. Many years ago, I had two large self-watering containers full of fresh herbs, located on my deck just off the back porch. After the first hurricane washed them away, my husband built me an elevated structure to plant my herbs and decided to move it to the south side of the house. However, it still floated away during a hurricane, so we now strap it to the house whenever we are threatened with high water.

It is so nice to just go out and clip whatever herbs I need for cooking. Currently, I am growing rosemary, which is wonderful on steaks and roasted potatoes; mint for tabouli salads, tea, and special cocktails; thyme for chicken dishes; basil for pesto and pasta; parsley for chimichurri sauce; oregano for vegetables and pizzas; sage for brown butter and turkey dressing; and dill for fish, shrimp, and egg and potato salads. Fresh herbs are so easy to grow and taste so good! Enjoy!
